How to Choose Breeding Software

5 min read·Updated June 2026

Breeding software should save you hours and reduce mistakes. Many tools are single-species, desktop-only, or lock core features behind expensive tiers. Use this checklist to choose well.

What to look for

  • Species coverage — does it handle every species you breed, not just dogs?
  • Pedigree tools — multi-generation pedigrees, COI calculation, and photo/OCR import.
  • Health & breeding — vaccination reminders, heat/mating tracking, litter and growth records.
  • Registry support — multiple registration numbers per animal across bodies.
  • Marketplace & buyers — listings, waitlists, contracts and buyer portals.
  • Mobile-first — a real app experience on your phone, not just a desktop site.
  • Fair pricing — a usable free tier and transparent upgrade path.

Questions to ask before you commit

  • Can I import my existing pedigrees without retyping everything?
  • Do I own and can I export my data?
  • Is it actively maintained and improved?
  • Does it work offline / install to my home screen?
